Vintage Intarsia Bear With Bow Tie Hanging Ornament

Intarsia is a woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted together to create a mosaic-like picture with an illusion of depth. Intarsia is created through the selection of different types of wood, using their grain pattern and coloring to create variations in the pattern.

So several years ago I was in Friday Harbor, WA, to do an animal shelter benefit. I found a wonderful carved wooden dog ornament and this bear in a small antique shop. Apparently Friday Harbor is the kind of place where it’s safe enough to put your name and phone number on the back of your work. I decided to call the woodworker’s number on the back. I was hoping he would agree to make a whole bunch more for Tails of Joy. We had a wonderful conversation but he was older now and wasn’t doing this kind of work any more. I enjoyed talking to him so much, I kept the items. But I never put them out, and they deserve to be seen, so I put them up here for the holidays, hoping they would get a happy new home. All ready to hang with any kind of ribbon you like.
